Converting degrees,minutes,& radians ;)

In class this week the lessons were mainly about how to convert degrees to minutes, then to seconds. Also we learned how to convert to radians!

  1. Degrees can be broken down into minutes (') and seconds (“)

a. To convert to minutes, you have to take what is behind the decimal and multiply it by 60.

Ex.1 Convert 15.32 to degrees in min.

a.32(60) = 19.2'

Ex. 2 Convert 1.67 to degrees in min.

b.67(60) = 40.2'

2. To convert to seconds, you take what is behind the decimal in the minutes and multiply it also by 60.

Ex.1 Convert min. to sec.

a. .2(60) = 12”

Ex.2 Convert min. to sec.

b. .2(60) = 12”

    1. To convert minutes and seconds to degrees:

      Formula is degrees+ min/sec. (+) sec./3600 = ANSWER

Ex.1 Convert 15 degrees, 13 minutes, 6 seconds to degrees

15 (+) 13/60 (+) 6/3600 = 15.2184

      2. Radians are the preferred way to measure angles. ALL formulas require radians.

      a. To convert degrees to radians(type in degrees/180 in calculator and convert to a fraction, put the (') symbol behind it).

Ex.1 Convert 298 degrees Radians

298degreesX (Pi/180) =149/90 Pi

b. To convert from radians to degrees:

RadsX 180/PIE = degrees

The PI'S cancel out.

Ex.1 Convert 5Pi/10 to degrees

5/10 Pi X180/Pi

(Pi's cancel)

= 90 degrees
