Degrees, minutes, seconds, and radians!:)

This week in class we learned how to convert degrees to minutes and seconds and also from radians to degrees and vice versa.

  1. To convert to minutes you take what is behind he decimal and multiply by sixty.

  2. To convert to seconds you take what is behind the decimal in minutes and multiply by sixty.

  3. To convert minutes and seconds to degrees you add degrees plus minutes divided by sixty plus seconds divided by sixty.

Ex. 1.) 211.994

- .994 times 60 = 59.64’(minutes)

- .64 times 60 = 38 “(seconds)

- 211 degrees 59’ 38”

Ex. 2.) 126 degrees 3’ 3”

- 126 + 3/60 + 3/3600

- 126 + 1/20 + 1/1200

- = 126.051 degrees

Radians are the preferred way to measure angles. ALL formulas require radians.

  1. To convert degrees to radians you take degrees times pi divided by 180.

(Type in the degrees divided by 180 in calculator and then convert to a fraction and put the pi beside it.)

  1. To convert from radians to degrees you take your radian times 180 divided by pi.

(The pi will cancel.)

Ex. 1.) 45 degrees

- 45 degrees times pi divided by 180

- = ¼ pi

Ex. 2.) 1.6 rads (another word for radian)

- 1.6 times 180 divided by pi

- = 91.673 degrees

- .673 times 60 = 40.38’

- .38 times 60 = 22”

91 degrees 40’ 22”
