SOHCAHTOA

Sin = opp/hyp

Cos = adj/hyp

Tan = opp/adj

1. Only used on right triangles

2. You can’t use the angle that’s 90 degrees.

3. An angle of elevation is an angle that represents looking up from the ground to the top of something.

4. An angle of depression is an angle that represents looking down from a window to something on the ground.

Example: The safety instructions for a 20ft ladder indicate that the ladder should not be inclined at more than 70 degrees from the ground. Suppose a ladder is leaned against a house at this angle. Find the distance from the base of the house to the foot of the ladder(x) and the height of the ladder(y).

First we want to find the height of the ladder so

Sin70 = y/20 y = 20sin70 = 18.794

Now we want to find the distance from the base of the house to the foot of the ladder so

Cos70 = x/20 x = 20cos70 = 6.840
